GEARBOX SERVICE

Complete BMW Airhead Gearbox Service for:

  • All 5 speeds from 1974 to 1995
  • Post 1969 4 speeds (Slash 5 Type)
  • Pre 1969 4 speeds (Slash 2 Type)

 

Each type has its own quirks and special needs.  They all require their own special tools too.  We can service them all right down to the last nut and bolt.

 

Obviously worn or broken parts get replaced as needed, heli-coils get installed when threads are found stripped, but in general a gearbox overhaul is as follows:

 

1974 - 1995 Five Speeds

This category is actually two distinctly different gearboxes, but in terms of service they are similar.

 

  • Total tear down and de-grease.
  • Full inspection.
  • New bearings.
  • New seals and gaskets.
  • New Neutral Switch
  • Shifter mechanism rebuild including new springs and roller.
  • Circlip groove retrofit (for output shaft forward bearing) as needed.
  • Shaft axial adjustment (shimming) to factory specification.

 

$500 - $600.  This includes a total breakdown and rebuild.  All new bearings, rebuilt shifter mechanism, stripping and rebuilding of I/P and O/P shafts.  Finally the gearbox is reassembled and shimmed to factory specs.  All new seals and gaskets are included.  This category encompasses all the 5-speeds including kick start and paralever models. Repairs and additional parts, if any, are at additional cost.

Circlip groove machining is available for $75 as needed.

Vapor Blasting available upon request for $40.

 

Optionally we can upgrade to a bearing type shift detent roller, and install alternate first and fifth gear ratios (complete RS race ratio gearsets are also available at extra extra cost).

 

All teardown and assembly is done using proper BMW tools or better. Turn around is about 3 to 4 weeks...depending on what repairs are needed.

 

1969 - 1974 Four Speeds (Slash 5 type)

  • Total tear down and de-grease.
  • Full inspection.
  • New bearings.
  • New seals and gaskets.
  • Re-adjustment of overshift and undershift stops.
  • Re-adjustment of shifter side play.
  • Shift fork adjustment.
  • Shaft axial adjustment (shimming) to factory specification.

 

$675 - $775.  These are done at a higher cost due to the more expensive replacement parts and the additional attention to detail needed to do these boxes correctly.  This service includes a total breakdown and rebuild of the gearbox.  All new bearings, stripping and cleaning of shifter mechanism, stripping and rebuilding of I/P and O/P shafts, and checking the shift forks and dog positions.  Finally the gearbox is reassembled and shimmed to factory specs.  All new seals and gaskets are included.  This category encompasses all 4-speeds after 1970.  Repairs and additional parts, if any, are at additional cost.

 

Optionally we can also provide Vapor Blasting of the gearbox case for $40.

Pre 1969 Four Speeds - Vintage (Slash 2)

  • Total tear down and de-grease.
  • Full inspection.
  • New bearings.
  • New seals and gaskets.
  • Re-adjustment of overshift and undershift stops.
  • Re-adjustment of shifter side play.
  • Upgrade to eccentric shift fork bushings.
  • Shift fork adjustment.
  • Shaft axial adjustment (shimming) to factory specification.

 

$725 - $800.  These are done at a higher cost due to the more expensive replacement parts and the additional attention to detail needed to do these boxes correctly.  This service includes a total breakdown and rebuild of the gearbox.  All new bearings, stripping and cleaning of shifter mechanism, stripping and rebuilding of I/P and O/P shafts, and checking the shift forks and dog positions.  Upgrade to /5 type bushings is available (and recommended) at extra cost.  Finally the gearbox is reassembled and shimmed to factory specs.  All new seals and gaskets are included.  This category encompasses all Slash 2 (/2) 4-speeds before 1970.  Repairs and additional parts, if any, are at additional cost.

 

Optionally we can also provide Vapor Blasting of the gearbox case for $40.

These are our standard table of rates for approximate costs.  This is generally a flat rate job with cost fluctuations based on the amount repair needed plus optional services.
